SOCIAL MEDIA POLICY: Dr. Cacali takes issues of confidentiality and privacy, as well as healthy boundaries relating to the therapeutic relationship, very seriously. In order to protect the right of both client and therapist for privacy, in order to safeguard the confidentiality of information shared between them, and in order to avoid confusion and maintain clear boundaries between client and therapist, Dr. Cacali has established the following policies and procedures.

Dr. Cacali maintains active social media accounts used as part of a professional practice to allow clients and other individuals to read blogs and pertinent information about therapeutic issues. The information offered on social media sites is also available on Dr. Cacali’s website. Dr. Cacali does not accept friend requests on these social media sites. Clients are welcomed to view and share articles and blogs on these social media sites but they will not be allowed to become fans to on these pages. There is no expectation from any client to follow Dr. Cacali’s news, blogs, or articles not to stream twitter. Moreover following Dr. Cacali might compromise the privacy of the client. Please note that Dr. Cacali does not follow current or past clients. Viewing information posted on social media by clients without their consent or an explicit agreement and purpose as part of the therapeutic process could create confusion and even a negative impact on the therapeutic relationship. Clients, however, are welcomed to bring things they shared on social media to be explored and discussed during therapy hour.

Having clients as “fans” puts in higher risk client confidentiality. It may also be viewed as an endorsement to Dr. Cacali’s practice. Principle 5.05 of the American Psychological Association’s Ethics Code prohibits soliciting testimonials from a client: “Psychologists do not solicit testimonials from current therapy clients/patients or other persons who because of their particular circumstances are vulnerable to undue influence.” This is also the reason that if a client finds Dr. Cacali’s practice listed on one of the business review sites such as Yelp, Healthgrades, Yahoo Local, Bing or others, they should not view it as a request for an endorsement, a testimonial, or rating. While clients have the right to express their opinions in any site they wish, it can put their privacy at risk. Dr. Cacali will not respond to comments made on these sites and one should consider that she might never actually see these comments. While clients are free to share who their therapist is with anyone they wish, including their feelings and thoughts about it, clients should consider using a pseudonym not connected to an established email when sharing private information in a public forum for the protection of one’s privacy. If a client feels uncomfortable sharing and discussing with Dr. Cacali something they experienced as harmful or unethical they are encouraged to contact the Board of Psychology to review the incident at 916-574-7720.
